Vietnamese Traditional Music to be presented in Germany

Vietnamese Traditional Music will be presented at LOFT and Kunsthaus Rhenania on occasion of the STROM Festival in Köln City in Germany on September 7-8.

‘Osmosis’ is an art project that Combines Vietnamese Traditional Music and European Contemporary Music.

‘Osmosis’ aims to bring Vietnamese Traditional Music in a modern perspective to the Vietnamese people, especially the younger generation abroad, who can introduce Vietnamese Music to international friends and carry Contemporary Music closer to the audience.

Genres of Vietnamese Traditional Music include ‘Ngam Tho’, ‘Xam’ and ‘Ca Tru’  will be performed at the festival by singer Kim Oanh, pianist and percussionist Lan Cao, saxophonist and flutist Gregor Siedl, contrabassist Constantin Herzog, electronic instrumentalist Sergej Maingardt and percussionist David Hernandez Deniz.

‘Osmosis’ has been initiated by Cao Thanh Lan, who is currently completing her Master’s Degree in Contemporary Piano Music at the Cologne University of Music and Dance (under Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, one of the world's foremost performing arts schools and one of the largest music institutions for higher education in Europe with its three campuses in Cologne, Wuppertal, and Aachen).

After several years of studying European Classical Music in Belgium and Germany, she realizes more and more the beauty of Vietnamese Traditional Music and the importance of preserving and developing its tradition. For this occasion she created concepts and structures and gathered a team of musicians from Germany, Austria, Kazachstan to join her in realizing this project.

Vietnamese traditional music singer Kim Oanh has spent more than 40 years on Vietnamese folk music. She studied with many well-known artisans in the country, such as ‘Ca Tru’ singer Quach Thi Ho and ‘Cai Luong’ artist Kim Sinh.
