*Viet Nam’s grandmaster Le Quang Liem took the first loss at the 17th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival in the United Arab Emirates after losing to Ghaem Maghami Ehsan from Iran.

Earlier, Quang Liem had put on a stunning show to draw with Ukrainian grandmaster Miroshnichenko Evgenij, who is the top seed of this year’s competition.

With three wins, three draws and one loss, Quang Liem scored 4.5 points and ranks 13th out of 70 players from 22 countries.

The Vietnamese grandmaster will take on India’s Koneru Humpy, who also gained 4.5 points, in the next round.

At present, Egyptian grandmaster Amin Bassem is leading the field with six wins.

*Nearly 150 young badminton players from sixteen countries and regions will participate in the 2007 Badminton Asia Under-16 Championships, which will be staged in Ha Noi’s Trinh Hoai Duc Gymnastic House from August 22 to 26.

The host team, including fifteen best players from Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City’s squad, will compete with visitors in five categories – men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
