Binh Thuan Province has four active thermal power plants, with a total capacity of nearly 4,300MW, including Vinh Tan 1, Vinh Tan 2, Vinh Tan 4, and Vinh Tan 4 Expansion. Fly ash and slag discharged from the operation of these factories have already piled up as high as mountains. Binh Thuan Province has tried all measures to handle it, but they are going nowhere.
By the end of March, the national thermal power plants felt the shortage of more than 3,000 MW of power due to lack of coal supply, and many units had to either stop functioning or slow production. The current supply of coal is still erratic and now there is risk of a serious power shortage during the summer months.
Vietnam is now in need of diversifying energy supply sources as it is facing a shortage of coal supply for electricity, cement, and fertiliser production due to impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia - Ukraine conflict.
Vietnam is highly likely to face the risk of a shortage of 3,000MW of electricity because mining companies can’t provide enough coal for thermal power plants, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has been seeking imported coal from Australia and Africa.
According to Vietnam Electricity (EVN), in the first quarter of this year, electricity mobilized from gas-fired thermal power plants and coal-fired thermal power plants must cut by 12-21 percent compared to last year because renewable energy (solar power) increased rapidly by up to 180 percent.
Renewable energy (RE) projects from wind, sunlight, and biomass are expected to make up for the shortage of electricity supply and gradually replace thermal and hydroelectric sources of power. This is especially important in the context that thermal power plants, especially small hydroelectric power plants, are negatively affecting the environment.
