Toll collection stops in damaged expressway

Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The yesterday signed a decision to halt toll collection in Da Nang-Quang Ngai expressway which was opened to traffic last month from October 12 to repair damage.

The minister required Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC) who is the investor of the project to ask contractors to urgently repair road face along the route under its supervision.
VEC must organize traffic to ensure safety for vehicles travelling in the street. Traffic Work Construction and Quality Management Department is responsible for keeping a close eye on the repair process.
After completing, VEC must report to the ministry to inspect quality before resuming toll collection.
Besides the toll collection halt, Minister Nguyen Van The strictly criticized the chairman cum director general of VEC for his lateness in repairing the road, insufficiently suppling information for the press and avoiding responsibility.
He required VEC’s board of members to make clear responsibilities of relevant teams and individuals.
Previously, representatives of the Directorate for Road of Vietnam said that reason for the expressway damage was not due to the weather as per announcement by the project’s management board. It has been due to construction mistakes.
The route now receives travel of up to 6,000 vehicles a day.
