Three men suffocate in abandoned gold mine

Police in Phu Ninh District of the central province of Quang Nam on May 5 pulled out the bodies of three men who had suffocated in an abandoned gold mine.

Earlier, Tran Viet Hoat, 49, from Tam Lanh Commune in Phu Ninh District; Ho Van Dien, 19; Ho Van Thuong, 18;  and Ho Van Loi, 21;from Tra Doc Commune in Bac Tra My District of Quang Nam Province had gone to the Ngach Chum gold mine in Kem Mountain in Tam Lanh Commune to dig for gold.

Hoat, Dien and Thuong choked to death as they descended to a depth of 400meters inside the mine area in Kem Mountain that was lying abandoned for years.

The lone survivor, Ho Van Loi, told police that he was cooking while the other three men had gone down the mine. Loi waited until morning and when nobody came out of the mine, he became frightened and asked the local people for help.

In related news, the People’s Committee in Nam Dong District of the central province of Thua Thien-Hue on May 5 affirmed that a group of strange people were seen digging holes and panning for gold in the rubber plantation area in Thuong Long Commune.

Before the group had pretended to hire the land for planting rubber trees at a high price, but by the evening they were seen digging for gold. Police have asked the group to level the hole and leave the area.
