Mr. Tai stressed the important role the tunnel will play to the city’s development.

Obayashi representatives said the contractor would do the best to complete the construction work with high quality because the tunnel also further the friendship and mutual understanding between Japan and Vietnam.

The 1.5km-long tunnel immersed section is 370m in length, 33m in width, 9m in height, with 6 lanes not including 2 emergency lances. Tunnel units are sealed with bulkheads of one meter meanwhile the bulkhead of the top and bottom is 1.meter. The vehicle velocity is 80 km per hour.

According to the East-West Highway Project Management unit, around 80 percent of construction was finished.

Ventilation, water pumping, damp-proofing, lightning, telecommunication, emergency alerting, fire and explosion prevention, automated gauges for noise, moisture, dust and exhaust tracking will then be carried out until the tunnel is ready to open to traffic on March next year.

The Saigon East-West Highway Project was implemented by the HCMC People’s Committee through financial assistance from the Japanese International Cooperation Agency with official development assistance loans of around US$456 million.
