Regarding a driver of pedicab overcharging a Japanese tourist VND2.9 million ($124.6) for five-minute trip back to his hotel, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism Nguyen Thi Anh Hoa yesterday said that her department and competent agencies have been verifying the information.

Several days ago some newspapers reported that 83-year-old Oki Toshiyuki who paid a visit to his relative in HCMC was insisted by a pedicab driver to take him back to his hotel while the old Japanese man was walking near Ben Thanh Market.
The dishonest pedicab driver overcharged the old man $124.6 for a short distant trip.
Ms. Hoa said that after investigating, the driver will receive a very harsh punishment as per regulations.
Moreover, she provided hot telephone numbers including tourism switchboard 1087 and Tourism Inspection team’s hot line 028.3823.4056 so that tourists can call to complain about similar case.
Statistically, from the beginning of the year, the Department of Tourism and Volunteer force have handled 2,652 violations in the tourism field including illegal pedicab driver, street vendors and beggars bothering travelers or insisting on using their service as well as taxi driver overcharging tourists.
To support tourists, the Department and relevant agencies have guided holiday-makers to actively inform the cases. Many dishonest drivers and bad guys have been arrested to return tourists money.
