Heavy downpours slam into Southern region

The Central Highlands and Southern regions are bracing for days of excessive rainfalls due to a strong impact of the southwestern monsoon.

The National Hydrology Meteorology Forecast Center said that flash downpours will continue converging on the Central Highlands and Southern regions in the evenings with the highest rainfall of 40- 70 mm, even up above 120mm in the Southeastern region until Friday. 

Powerful operation of the southwestern monsoon brings severe weather such as violent thunderstorm, cyclone spells and strong downpours which blew up hundreds of houses in the Mekong Delta. 

Some Mekong Delta provinces and cities of Soc Trang, Can Tho, Kien Giang, Ca Mau have been hammered by long- lasting heavy downpour days.

Many roads were inundated by the excessive rainfall. 

As reported, one person died and several people were injured after the overcast rainy days hitting Ca Mau province. In addition, violent winds caused damage of 2,508 houses and destroyed 2, 540 meters of traffic roads with total estimated at over VND28 billion.

According to the latest news from the Standing Office of the Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, downpours and flooding from former storm Wipha in the recent consultative days have left 12 dead and 9 injured in the Northern mountainous provinces and Thanh Hoa.
