Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kiem, held an urgent meeting with Binh Thuan Province authorities on Nov 19 asking for more speedy action in tackling, preventing and controlling the spread of hand-foot-mouth disease in the region.
She asked province authorities to provide accurate and timely information on the disease to residents and provide knowledge of ways to implement preventive measures, such as cleaning of homes and school premises.
The province was asked to use the media as a means to raise awareness in citizens and propagate preventive methods to control the disease. Organizing groups have also been asked to visit residents in infected areas and offer whatever help they can.
Tien asked the ministry to provide medicines and equipment to Binh Thuan Province to help control and eradicate the disease as soon as possible.
As recorded until November 17, so far 645 people had contracted the disease in the province, 28.6 times higher than in the same period last year, with four fatalities.
Tien called on people to keep their surroundings hygienically clean and wash their hands regularly, especially those of their children and those who took care of them or fed them.
Local heath facilities must use all possible resources to treat patients effectively and to curb the spread of the disease, Tien added.
