103 hospitalized after eating infected beef in Gia Lai Province

103 people in Krong Pa District of the central highlands province of Gia Lai were hospitalized after eating the infected beef, said Siu Thanh, deputy director of Medical Center in the district on September 17.

According to Mr. Thanh, a household in Chu Drang Commune in Krong Pa District September 15 killed a fatted cow for a wedding party. Many residents in the commune were invited to the wedding party.

After party, they some suffered headache, pain in belly, diarrhea and fever; many of them were rushed to emergency room in the medical clinic. On September 16 and 17, 103 people were transfered to medical clinic in Chu Drang Commune and medical facility in Krong Pa District.

Patients said that they ate the meat of cow that had been sick a few days before; so it was injected by a vet. According to the initial investigation, medical workers said that the patients were sick because of eating the infected beef. Luckily, many of them were discharged from hospital after a few days.

Medical workers of Krong Pa District sent staffs to spray chemicals to disinfect the area and encourage inhabitants not to eat sick cattle. Sample was taken for test.

In related news, the General Hospital in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau September 17 admitted two fishermen Tran Van Phong, 45, and Pham Tien Hoc, 54 who were seriously poisoned after drinking alcohol. According to the two fishermen’s relatives, Hoc and Phong drank alcohol with many other fishermen in the boat of Nguyen Van Lam in the Mekong delta province of Kien Giang.

After a long time, other fishermen went ashore while Lam, Hoc and Phong continued drinking. Till 9 PM, Phong and Hoc returned their boat to sleep.

After a few moments, fisherman Lam detected that Lam died in his boat so he ran to the boat of Phong and Hoc to tell them; when Lam arrived at Phong and Hoc’s boat, he discovered the two fishermen unconscious frothing at the mouth. Lam shouted for help and soon the two fishermen were taken to the hospital for emergency.

Medical workers said that both fishermen were poisoned ethanol seriously, and they are putting on ventilators.
