Vietnam’s first public university given 4 stars under QS rankings

Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU) in Ho Chi Minh City received a four-star ranking by the UK-based QS Stars University Rating System, as announced on September 4 as part of the opening ceremony for the new 2018-2019 school year.

Established in 1997, the facility is a public establishment operated under the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL). It is the first university in Vietnam to receive such ranking, which is valid from 2018 through to 2021.

The TDTU is rated the maximum five stars in the categories of teaching (based on student feedback via national surveys, further study rate, and student faculty ratio), internationalisation (proportion of international students and staff), facilities, and inclusiveness (covering accessibility, scholarships and bursaries, gender equality, and low-income outreach).

The university obtained four stars in the employability category, which has been based on surveys of employers, graduate employment rates, and career service support.

Speaking at the ceremony, President of the VGCL Bui Van Cuong praised the TDTU’s achievements and pledged to create the best possible conditions for the university to develop into an exemplary model in Vietnam.

TDTU President Le Vinh Danh introduced a number of the milestones the facility has recorded in over 20 years of its development.

He said the university was ranked among the top 250 sustainable establishments voted by the UI Greenmetric World University Rankings last year, as well as taking the lead in the number of scientific results published in international journals according to the Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science.

In July 2018, the High Council for Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (HCERES) recognised the TDTU as being compliant with French and European standards for universities. This accreditation has been granted for a five-year term, from July 2018 to July 2023.
