$77,437 scholarships presented to poor students

The Ho Chi Minh City Study Encouragement Association yesterday held a ceremony to present scholarships to more than disadvantaged 500 students worth VND1.8 billion ($77, 437).

At the ceremony, the association honored 16 excellent students and 162 graduates. Moreover, 119 good but poor students received scholarships. Additionally, 415 students who had been granted scholarships before were also given scholarships this time. Total scholarships are VND1.8 billion.
Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Huynh Cach Mang praised study encouragement activities over the past 18 years.
To develop Vietnam’s tradition of studying, the study encouragement associations take initiatives in promote learning movements in families and residential areas, contributing to preventing social bad deeds, reducing poverty and raising public intellectual standards.
Moreover, it launches lifetime learning movement through models “ learning families” and “learning community”.
Over the past 18 years, the municipal Study Encouragement Association has given over VND22 billion ($946,000 ) to assist around 2,526 poor students with good academic performance.
The association has encouraged 42 organizations and 619 benefactors to help poor students for years.
Mr. Mang therefore expected the association and its branches in districts to continue its task and liaise with administrations and unions to improve learning movement in districts.
Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Study Encouragement Association Professor Dr. Pham Tat Dong said that the association will issue a document relating to building a learning city as a reference book, adding that party members must be examples in learning movement to shed learning attitude to people.
