‘Ngo’ Boat Race Festival organized in Soc Trang

The much awaited ‘Ngo Boat Race’ of the ethnic Khmer people of the Mekong Delta attracting thousands of people took place on  Máspero River in Soc Trang Province on November 6.

51 teams from Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Hau Giang and Vinh Long participated in this year’s traditional boat race

The event was one of the activities of the Mekong Delta Economic Cooperation forum (MDEC) 2014 celebrated in Soc Trang province from November 5-7.

‘Ngo’ boat (Ghe Ngo) is considered a sacred object of the ethnic Khmer people. The special boat is made of wood by artisans and Khmer Buddhist monks. The boat is decorated with images of dragons, tigers, elephants, lions and peacocks representing the power of the boat.

The annual ‘Ngo’ boat race is one of the highlights of the many traditional historical and cultural events of Khmer people.
