Can Gio’s Nghinh Ong Festival to be held in October

The annual Nghinh Ong (Whale Worshiping) Festival 2017 in Ho Chi Minh City’s Can Gio District will take place on October 3-5, announced the organizing board of great festivals in the city and the People’s Committee of Can Gio District at the press conference of the event on September 27.

The city-level festival will include a series of entertainment and cultural activities such as visiting the Rung Sac martyr’s cemetery remembering soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect the country; a procession at Ong Thuy Tuong Temple (Temple Worshiping the Whale); exhibitions of national defense and security, socio-economic achievements of Can Gio District, and Can Gio's Unesco Mangrove Biosphere Reserve.
There will be also traditional music performances, food fair, traditional market, a circus performance and folk games during the 3 day festival.
The annual festival is celebrated on the fifth day of August on the Lunar Calendar with festivities including various rituals to worship the Whale or Ca Ong, and prayers for good seas, happiness and prosperity. It is an opportunity for Can Gio district to promote its image and highlight its quintessential traditional features to local and international visitors.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism recognized the annual Nghinh Ong (Whale Worshiping) Festival held in Can Gio District in Ho Chi Minh City as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013.
