Art program honoring Cai Luong launched in HCMC

A program honoring and promoting cai luong, a traditional southern Vietnamese form of theater will be launched at Ben Thanh Theater in HCMC’s district 1 on July 7.

The show titled Tram Nam Nguon Coi (A Hundred-Year History) will present to devotees excerpts from popular cai luong plays such as Doi Co Luu (Ms Luu’s Life) and Cau Tho Yen Ngua (Poetry and Saddle) with the participation of People’s Artist Bach Tuyet, Meritorious Artist Viet Anh, together with cai luong stars Vu Linh, Thanh Kim Hue, Que Tran, Tu Suong, Trinh Trinh and Dien Trung.
The highlight is an item featuring immortal Cai Luong piece, Da Co Hoai Lang (Awaiting One's Husband at midnight), performed by artist Ngoc Doi. The song is written by musician Cao Van Lau in 1919 which tells the story of a wife who waits for her husband to return from the battlefield and wins hearts of millions of cai luong lovers.
The program which is produced by Green Horizon company and directed by quang Thao is expected to be run from July to October.
The organizer hopes the program will contribute in keeping Cai Luong alive in the community, promoting the kind of traditional music and fostering a love for the folk music among young people.
